Ovarian cysts are something that
many women have but are not even aware of it. This is
because in most of the cases, they are completely benign and
there won't even be any symptoms from them. Typically, they
are found during a routine pelvic exam by a doctor. However,
in some cases they will be discovered when the women
complains of the symptoms that they carry. These include
lower abdominal pain and pressure, abnormal menstruation,
frequent visits to the toilet as well as general symptoms
such as dizziness, weakness and vomiting. When the ovarian
cysts are causing pain then it can be a problem and one of
the solutions is ovarian cyst surgery.
Ovarian cyst surgery is usually required when
there is complications involved. This could be due to the
cyst growing too large and causing severe pain, becoming
ruptured or twisting which also causes a lot of pain.
Typically, on discovery of the ovarian cyst, the doctor
will advise the patient to watch and wait and see what
happens especially if there are no symptoms. Another
treatment is to prescribe birth control pills which will
stop the female ovulating and make it very unlikely that
new cysts are formed. However, if the cyst does not go
away on its own, has gotten large or is causing pain then
ovarian cyst surgery may have to be done.
When talking about ovarian cyst surgery, there
are generally 2 main procedures that could be performed.
For smaller and benign looking cysts then the doctor will
put the patient under general anesthesia and carry out
what is known as a laparoscopy. With this procedure the
surgeon will make a small cut around the navel and insert
a small telescopic instrument inside the abdomen and is
then able to remove the cyst. The other type of ovarian
cyst surgery that may be done is a laparotomy which would
be if the cyst has grown large and dangerous looking.
Bigger incisions in the stomach are required while the
patient is under anesthesia. If the cyst is tested to be
cancerous the surgeon may have to remove some of the
surrounding tissues such as the ovary, uterus or lymph
nodes as well as the cyst.
