Most ovarian cysts are small and benign
and do not come with any symptoms at all. They will simply
disappear without you even knowing they were there after around
4-6 weeks of growing. However if the cyst grows larger then
this can cause problems and some ovarian cyst symptoms can be
felt. Before looking at some of the symptoms of ovarian cysts,
we should qualify that feeling the symptoms alone is not enough
for a diagnosis of having an ovarian cyst. There are many other
conditions that have the same or very similar signs and
symptoms as ovarian cysts such as endometriosis, ectopic
pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease and ovarian
cancer.
That being said, it is still important to
know what the ovarian cyst symptoms are. Some of the following
symptoms may be felt if you have an ovarian cyst:
- Irregular menstrual
cycles
- Heavier or lighter periods than
normal
- Dull pelvic pain that may be
constant or come and go
- Pelvic pain before or during
period
- Discomfort or pain in the lower
abdominal area
- More frequent need to go to the
toilet due to pressure on the bowels and pain when
doing so
- Nausea and vomiting
- Breast tenderness
Generally if you feel any of the symptoms
above it is worthwhile to go and see your doctor to get checked
out.
More severe ovarian cyst symptoms
can be felt if complications develop such as the rupturing of
an ovarian cyst. This can result in severe and sudden lower
abdominal pain along with a fever and vomiting. Medical
attention should of course be sought immediately if this
happens.
