What Are The Most Common
Ovarian Cyst Symptoms? |
In most cases when a cyst grows on the ovary it
is small and benign and there are no painful symptoms
experienced. However, in some instances the cysts can
grow large and some symptoms are felt. In this article we
will discuss some of the main ovarian cyst symptoms.
Before we look at the symptoms of ovarian cysts, it is
important to first understand what a cyst is, and more
specifically ovarian cysts.
Cysts are sacs of fluid that can grow on any
part of the body. They can differ in size and also in the
viscosity of the liquids they contain i.e. from very
watery to solids which may be called tumours. An ovarian
cyst is, strangely enough, a cyst that develops inside an
ovary. This happens when the follicle that an egg forms
inside does not release the egg properly or does not
shrink after releasing it. The swelling of liquid that
results is known as an ovarian cyst. We will now look at
some of the most common ovarian cyst
symptoms.
As mentioned at the start of the article, most
ovarian cysts pass off painlessly and the female will not
even be aware that they existed. However, the cysts that
grow larger than normal will bring some symptoms. Below
are some of the most commonly experienced ovarian cyst
symptoms:
- Discomfort and pain in the lower abdomen that
may be infrequent and not persist for long or could come
in longer spells.
- Timing of periods may be irregular and may be
lighter or heavier than usual.
- The need to visit the toilet more often could
occur depending on the size and position of the cyst
since it may be putting pressure on the bladder or
bowels.
- Although unusual, it is possible that the
ovarian cysts will cause abnormal hormone levels. This
can affect many things such as your periods and body hair
and breast growth.
- Futher ovarian cyst symptoms can be caused by
having multiple ovarian cysts, known as polycystic
ovarian syndrome.
- Serious problems such as when the cyst is
growing on a stem from an ovary which may cause the stem
to twist, restricting the cyst's blood supply. The cyst
may resultantly burst, giving some severe and sudden
lower abdominal pain.
If you feel that you may be experiencing any of
the ovarian cyst symptoms listed above, it is recommended
to seek the advice of your doctor and you may require
treatment in hospital.
